Numeracy/Literacy

Numeracy – the ability to use basic math skills in everyday life – is a key skill that all children need. So is literacy – a mastery of the basic principles of reading and writing. (Numeracy and literacy together used to be called The Three Rs - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.)

Research and experience have shown children benefit from developing these skills early – and parents are important partners in that learning. That’s why the Ministry of Education has developed tools you can use at home to help your child develop their skills in numeracy and literacy.

Math for Families is a guide for parents with children in Kindergarten and Grade 1. It’s full of great ideas to help make learning numeracy skills part of everyday life.

Similar guides called Reading for Families and Writing for Families are available here.

For more information and resources, go to the ministry’s numeracy home page or the ReadNow BC site. You may also want to visit the Early Learning section of this website.
