Libraries

The role of public libraries becomes even more important in the information age.  Public libraries provide information that is easily accessible.  For a complete listing with links to BC's public libraries, please click here

Expert Help is a Click Away: Putting the Knowledge and Resources of Librarians Online

AskAway (www.askaway.org) is a new virtual reference library service providing better access to more information. You can obtain the information you require from a real librarian in real time using a simple live chat format anytime and anywhere. The AskAway virtual reference service will:

  • expand library access and services to BC residents across the province;
  • be staffed by public and post-secondary librarians;
  • use special software to connect 160 librarians from 46 public libraries to residents across BC; and
  • connect 100 librarians from 20 post-secondary institutions (these academic librarians will provide specialist resources for post-secondary students, including access to academic research databases).

Online Full-Text Articles and Books at Your Fingertips

Research databases contain published information you won't find in search engines.  Public Libraries subscribe to databases the way you would subscribe to a newspaper or magazine.  In our databases, you can search for current information from thousands of publications on a topic and read, print or email articles right away.

BC public libraries offer free access to a variety of databases including:

  • Magazine and Encyclopedia articles for children;
  • Newspapers and magazines;
  • Encyclopedias;
  • Business resources; and
  • Consumer health information.

Library Programs Help Children at School

In addition to free access to public computers and Internet services, libraries continue to promote childhood education through a variety of programs including summer reading clubs, teen book clubs, class visits, library tours, school preparedness programs, and author readings.
